Notes

Course Evaluations Tonight!

Remember – intro -> get to the point, engage our attention quickly then tell us what the paper is about: clearly, precisely. This is the roadmap – essential for this type of writing. Essential for good business writing, too.

Conclusion -> rests on everything that came before it (no new info) and restates (in an interesting way) the opening.

Observations on Annotated Bibliographies

Write clearly, concisely and creatively. Don’t start each annotation with “This book” or “This article” or “This resource”.

Remember to link the source to your research in the narrative; this may be easier to do at the end than in draft.

Journal articles: unless you read the paper version, you must cite it as an electronic version. That means you need to include the DOI with the citation or if a DOI is not available, per APA, a link to the journal homepage. I’d prefer that you link to the abstract itself; if you link to the abstract using the UW database, be kind to your readers and tell them it is the University of Washington. Please make these links “hot” (clickable).

Books: if you read an electronic edition like the Kindle that does not have page numbers, you need to indicate this if you are going to directly quote from the book. Why? You won’t have page numbers, you’ll have section numbers. Eeeek!

Publicly available web documents : not only link to the resource but give us the access or retrieval date. Thus, if someone tries the link and it’s 404, they will have a bracket of time when they know that the link was live.

APA style: remember that the purpose of a citation is to make it easy for those who follow you to recreate your work. Following a style (template/format) means that all of your relevant parts will be included in each reference.

Purdue has great resources for APA (and writing)

Observations on Book Reviews (in context of projects – assessment criteria)

Most leaned more towards “report” than “review.” The “review” is your opinion, which should rest on evidence. Your course projects should have a clear point of view (“argument”) that is supported by evidence (all of the sources you’ve found). Exemplary:

Coco: The Victorian Internet

Corey: The Master Switch

Elise: The Victorian Internet

Eric: The Victorian Internet

Jackie: The Victorian Internet

Mike: Soap, Sex and Cigarettes: A Cultural History of American Advertising

Lisa: We The Media

Louise: A Tower In Babel

Be careful with assertions that include “would/will” – do you have evidence for the claim?

Be careful with “may be” - eg, He may be playing on Sunday not “maybe” (I saw this more than once)

Be careful with “it’s” and “its” (I see this a lot)

Pick verbs carefully – make sure your subject can “do” the verb you assign; remember active tense rather than passive

“Strong/ly” is a “weak” adjective/adverb : overused, often improperly used (“strength”), a thesaurus is your friend!

Be wary of extensive direct quotes -> looking for “you” in your writing, a synthesis of ideas

With direct quotations, you need page number references. You do not need page number references when you paraphrase. For long quotations (more than a short sentence), but sure to offset the quotation (“block quote”).

Decades are plural not possessive (eg, the 1990s not the 1990′s)

Be careful with possessives: when you are talking about the impact of such-and-such, unless such-and-such is actually a so-and-so, you probably want to avoid using the possessive!

Remember basic structure when writing your papers:
* Intro: Tell us what you will tell us (in a longer paper like your projects, this should include a roadmap)
* Body: Tell us what you believe and back it up with evidence (follows the roadmap laid out in introduction)
* Conclusion: Tell us what you told us – the conclusion should not introduce new information, should link directly to the introduction and should rest soundly on evidence/arguments in the body

Recap, Course Theories (ppt)

Breaking news and Twitter (below)

Small group discussion: how might you frame/explain these phenomena using course theories? What might come next? [pick one!]

CNN: born in 1980, moved mainstream w/1991 Gulf War; for the first time, it trumped the three networks with viewership. Twitter: born in 2006, moves mainstream with #ObL death in 2011? (See chart, number of tweets/second: do the math! – plus Sysomos maps the #ObL tweets – truly global: http://bit.ly/k6UVbJ)

For the first time in 20 years, the percentage of US homes with TVs has dropped; Nielsen is considering redefining what it means to be a “TV household” to include Internet (TCP/IP) viewers: http://nyti.ms/mFH2lj

What are the implications for adoption – where do you think each service is on Rogers’ matrix – lessons from Sony’s big security lapse and Amazon’s cloud-computing outage http://t.co/ddlZABx

Project Buddies Discussion

Update one another on where you are regarding research. (Annotated Bibliographies linked below.) What sorts of information are you finding and which databases seem most fruitful?

How has your research question evolved as you have discovered more information about your topic?

Discuss which course theories make the most sense for your arguments

Someone take notes – especially on resourceful databases/journals – and add as a comment to this blog post. Remember to tell us who is in the group!

Discussion Groups 4&5 : in groups of three, discuss your reaction as a consumer to the process – what do you like, not like, why — and how might your presentation be different relative to what you might have done three weeks ago?

For all groups: how can you incorporate these presentation techniques into non-school life? What tips do you have for anyone thinking about changing their presentation style?

Discussion Leaders

Week 1: Lisa, Mike, Rachael, Ruba, Zanna

Process: we’ll count off, 1-5. Peer teaching/discussion commences. Then presenters stay seated, students rotate. We’ll do this at least three times. Then we’ll come back as a group for thematic discussion.

What role do social media play in the innovation-decision process described by Rogers?

Thinking about hard drive technology, what are some emerging technologies, how disruptive are they, and what long term potential do they have?

Everyone should provide commentary/feedback on two DL blog posts: one that you heard and one that you didn’t. DLs have a breather. :-)

Thinking About Presentations

Lecture (PPT/Slideshare)

Working in pairs, search Slideshare.net and find at least one “good” and one “bad” example presentation related to course topics or your research topics. Please comment on this post with your examples (links!) and a short explanation. Tell me the names of the folks in the pair, please. :-)

General discussion : why did you pick those presentations?

Book Review Discussion

I’m making the assumption that (almost) everyone has read /part/ of their book. For this discussion:

How has the book changed (or reinforced) your perceptions of your research topic?

How might you incorporate this info into your project paper?

How does the book illustrate theories we’re talking about in class?

Book Reviews:

Be sure to include basic info (title, author, when published). Usually this is at the beginning or the end of the review.

We are more interested in analysis than summary, but you need to provide enough summary so that someone who has not read the book ‘gets’ the points you are going to make — don’t spend a lot of time (words) on info that you aren’t going to critique!

Analyze what author got right/wrong if there are future projections

Focus on implications for your research area

Be sure to make a recommendation in your closing graph (e.g., who should or should not read the book and why; if it should be part of your library or recycled through HalfPrice Books; whether this book makes you more or less likely to read something else by the same author)

The audience for this review is “the world” not “the class”

Questions for thought/discussion

What are some of the differences between buying books and buying, for example, groceries? Of these two, which shopping experience is more “social” or more “risky” and why do you make that judgment? What structures (technology) and mores (society) must be in place before ecommerce can become viable? Why might buying books and music online “succeed” but buying groceries “not so much”? Why did supermarkets (bricks-and-mortar) not take off in Europe like they did in the U.S.?

In order to state how individuals—as potential consumers—decide to use the Internet and the kind of use they made of it, how reliable are models conceived for non-interactive mediums as TV or Radio?

If the Internet is still an information delivery medium, what might be the value of having a live interaction with other users or customer services just before deciding on a purchase?

Projects

Groups of three. Read the other two proposals, then ask one another clarifying questions.

Citations

Note that the information you need will be available in almost every citation – but all are not APA style. We are all using APA style because standardization makes my life easier and yours, too. :-)

Use the basic form for a periodical:

Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year, Month Date). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages. Retrieved from URL.

Thus, this cite:

Morton, John. It Could Be Worse, American Journalism Review, Dec2008/Jan2009, Vol. 30 Issue 6, p52-52, 1p http://web.ebscohost.com.offcampus.lib.washington.edu/ehost/detail?vid=4&hid=4&sid=537c03f7-a60a-4327-8284-610be652fbbd%40sessionmgr10&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#db=ufh&AN=35794486

Becomes:

Morton, J. (2008, December). It could be worse. American Journalism Review, 30(6) 52. Retrieved December 1,2009 from Ebscohost.com, University of Washington Library

(Note: please link “deep” to the article itself and include a DOI if one exists)

APA no longer requires “retrieve date” for articles found in databases, but you must include the date for general web access and I still include it for journal articles.

I do want you to provide information about the database, even though APA now considers this optional information, because it will make it easier for your classmates (and for me) to “find” your sources.

NOTE: this is not a scholarly article; it is an op-ed (and is identified as such in the abstract). There are no sources cited in the (very short) essay, which is another clue that this source doesn’t meet the “scholarly” test.
