Opportunities for disruptive change in the health information industry
The health information industry is poised for a major metamorphosis in the next few years with the emergence of personal health systems that can mine data stored in personal health records, and the increased use of social computing for personal health purposes. In order to understand the role health information will play in the future, it’s instructive to look at what role health information has played historically in the lives of consumers. Predicting the future is a difficult undertaking, but Clayton Christensen’s theories of innovation provide a useful framework for understanding the potential to disruptive changes in the health information industry in the future, and for what the competitive landscape will look like.
